If you'd like to transfer your domain away from Turbify, we strongly recommend completing the transfer of your domain before you cancel (Trust us, this will save you headaches in the long run.).
If you are also changing your hosting provider, we suggest changing your name servers to your new host before you initiate the transfer. Once the transfer has been initiated, you will not be able to change the name servers until the domain has been transferred to your new registrar. Note: You can still access your business email in the webmail interface after changing the name servers. However, you will not be able to send and/or receive messages.
Important: You may also wish to back up your website, database, and business email before cancelling or changing your name servers.
If you're ready to transfer your domain
- Verify that at least 60 days have passed since you registered or last transferred your domain.
In accordance with ICANN rules, you cannot transfer your domain to another provider until 60 days after you register or transfer your domain.
- Make sure your domain is unlocked.
For your security, locked domains cannot be transferred. If your domain is locked, visit your Domain Control Panel and unlock the domain. Learn more.
- Confirm access to your Registrant and Administrative contact email addresses.
Tucows will send an email to both the domain's Registrant and Administrative addresses to confirm your domain transfer.
- Get your authorization code.
To find your authorization code (sometimes called an EPP code), head to your Domain Control Panel, and click the View Your Authorization Code link. On the following page, you'll see your unique domain authorization code. Print this code (it's case-sensitive), as you'll need it to give to your new provider. Learn more.
Note: Some hosting providers cannot manage domain registrations. If you'd still like to use your domain with this kind of provider, you can redirect, or redelegate, your Turbify name servers to point to that provider. In this case,
do not cancel your plan, as you'll need it to continue managing your domain through Turbify; instead you may
contact support for assistance with downgrading to a Domains plan.
- Contact your new provider.
When you're ready, contact your new provider to begin the transfer process. Be sure to have your authorization code handy, as your new provider will need it to verify the move. If you have made any changes in steps 2–4 above, we recommend you wait at least 24 hours before contacting your new provider; this will allow time for your updates to be recognized.
- Watch for the transfer verification email
After submitting the authorization code to your new provider, Tucows will send a verification email to the Administrative contact address. Follow the instructions as this email must be responded to in order to verify the transfer. Your transfer will automatically complete in about five business days after verifying the transfer. Note: The email sent to the Registrant contact can expedite the transfer by confirming the transfer as soon as it's received. Learn more.
- Cancel your plan.
Important: Transferring your domain does not close your Turbify account. Once your transfer is complete, we'll send you an email confirming the transfer (you can also check this status with your new provider--it could take up to nine days). When you receive this confirmation, you may cancel your plan. Please note that Turbify does not automatically cancel your service when you transfer your domain.
