A Twitter hashtag is a keyword, key phrase, or acronym prefixed with the symbol, which is used by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages. When Twitter users post tweets using hashtags, other Twitter users can click on the hashtag to see a real-time feed of other tweets using that hashtag. Tweets using this hashtag will also be displayed in a real-time feed when someone searches for the term on Twitter.

Twitter's support pages offer the following points about hashtags:

  • People use the hashtag symbol (#) before relevant keywords in their tweet to categorize those tweets to show more easily in Twitter search.
  • Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other tweets in that category.
  • Hashtags can occur anywhere in the tweet.
  • Hashtagged words that become very popular are often trending topics.

The Social Media Sharing feature lets you define a custom Twitter hashtag for your store. When a customer clicks Share on Twitter on a product page, this hashtag will automatically be included in the default message provided for the customer to share with their Twitter followers. While customers may modify this default message, including a hashtag can encourage them to use the hashtag in their tweet.

Adding a Twitter hashtag

  1. Sign in to your My Services page.
  2. Click the Store link.
The Store link is under Control Panels.
  3. Go to Store Editor.
The Store Editor link is under Edit.
  4. Go to Variables.
    The Variables button.
  5. In the Social Media Sharing section, enter a Twitter hashtag in the Twitter-hashtag field. Hashtags may be up to 20 characters in length, and shouldn't include a # sign. The sign is automatically added to your hashtag in the default message provided to customers who choose to share your product information on Twitter, and including a # sign in this field will result in the hashtag displaying a duplicate sign (such as ##myhashtag).
