The Design Wizard allows you to choose if you want a template with the product navigation links in the side bar region or in the top region. If you select to use a generic template, you can choose the side navigation layout, and then select any color palette for that template. When you select a pre-designed template, there are only specific templates (templates 1-7) which are based on the side navigation template.
Below the Yahoo Gear text you can see links to the top-level categories for this store. Products or categories (sections) added to the home page will appear in the product navigation links.
By default, your store is set up with a side navigation template. Also, pre-designed templates include more side navigation templates than top navigation templates, and for generic templates, side navigation layout is the default as well. This is because side navigation links provide the most room for growth for stores. For example your apparel store may start out with top-level links such as
However, over time you may wish to add more top-level categories such that your navigation menu includes:
- Men's
- Women's
- Teens
- Accessories
- Formal Wear
- Shoes
- What's Hot
- Clearance Sale
- Shop by designer
- Shop by price
With top navigation layouts, too many top-level links will wrap the navigation bar to two or more rows, whereas a side navigation layout provides a larger area for more links as your store grows.
