When a promotion is published, it is automatically assigned a rank. This rank indicates the priority a promotion is given. If you have selected to have promotions be combinable it will dictate the order that promotions get applied, and if you have selected to not allow promotions to be combined it indicates which promotion will be applied.
This means that if you have promotion A that is ranked first, it will always be applied when the conditions are met. Then if you have promotion B, and you selected the option for promotions to be combined, it will also be applied when the conditions are met. If you have multiple promotions where the conditions have been met, they will be applied in the order of their rank in the Promotion Manager.
Here is an example about how promotion ranking can impact orders:
Promotion for items is higher than order promotion rank
- Items: A=$100 B=$100 C=$100.
- Promotion 1, with rank 1 assigned: 50% off items A and B.
- Customer has added items A, B and C to shopping cart, with promotion discount subtotal: $50+$50+$100=$200.
- Promotion 2, with rank 2 assigned: 10% off order total, discount applied will be $20.
- Total discount given: $50 for item A, $50 for item B and $20 for order subtotal, totaling $120.
If the promotion ranks are now reversed
- Items: A=$100 B=$100 C=$100.
- Promotion 2, with rank 1 assigned: 10% off order subtotal.
- Customer has added items A, B and C to shopping cart, with promotion discount of 10% discount: $30.
- Promotion 1 with rank 2: 50% off items A and B.
- Promotion 1 discount: $50 off item A and $50 off item B.
- Total discount given: $50 for item A, $50 for item B and $30 for 10% off order subtotal, totaling $130 discount.
Promotion Ranking for promotions that are not combinable
- Promotion A, with rank 1 assigned= 10% off order total.
- Promotion B, with rank 2 assigned= Free Shipping.
- In this example, the customer will only receive 10% off their order total because you selected not to allow the promotions to be combinable.
If the ranks are now reversed
- Promotion A, with rank 2 assigned= 10% off order total.
- Promotion B, with rank 1 assigned= Free Shipping.
- In this example, the customer will only receive free shipping because you selected not to allow the promotions to be combinable.
By making the order total promotion the lower rank, this results in a $10 difference. Depending on your promotions, the results may vary, but typically making the order total the lower rank will benefit you, the merchant.
Note: You cannot combine multiple promotions that require the customer to input a promotion code. The shopping cart only allows for one discount code to be applied to an order. See our help pages for more information on combining promotions and combining coupons.
When a promotion is not published, it will not have a rank assigned and you will not have the ability to modify the rank until you are in the process of publishing, or after you have published the promotion.
