Domain redirect setting change

Learn about updating or adding a hostname for your store.

Article ID: SLN18345

Each Turbify store has multiple URLs to get to identical pages such as your domain and storeID.stores.turbify.net. Find your store ID.

These URLs serve different purposes for your store. If you search for your store using a search engine, you may see these different URLs appearing in the result pages. This may be a problem because the relevancy rankings are spread out among those URLs, whereas you may want to optimize the relevancy rankings to just one URL. This can also be a problem if the pages are viewed as duplicate content (two or more pages with identical content), which can lead to these pages being dropped from a search engine index.

The Domain Name Management page allows you to select a domain or hostname to which to permanently* redirect (301) all Turbify generated URLs. By default, all stores will be set to none meaning no URLs will be redirected. You can choose to redirect all Turbify-generated URLs to any hostname or domain name listed on the Domain Management page or even to not redirect any URLs.

The redirect is permanent according to the W3C status codes as the requested URL is designated by the server as permanently moved as opposed to found - temporarily moved (302). You can select a new redirect setting whenever you like. The setting itself is not permanent.

Note: Setting a domain redirect will only work if the domain traffic option is set to your store pages. However, the default store.domainname will always redirect to your store pages (unless you make changes to the CNAME record for store.domainname).

Important: If you previously enabled secure storefront, changing the domain or hostname may invalidate your SSL certificate. It's recommended to check your settings in Security Manager beforehand.

What happens if I don't set a Domain Redirect?

If you choose not to set a domain redirect, we will set your domain redirect setting to the default storeID.stores.yahoo.net.

How will this affect my search ranking?

If you did not have a domain redirect setting previously, adding one may improve your search rankings if search engines were penalizing your site for duplicate content (multiple pages with identical content served from different URLs). Using a domain redirect will permanently redirect (301) visitors (or search engine crawlers) to any duplicate URLs to only one URL.

How do I select a Domain Redirect Setting?

  1. Sign in to your My Services page.
  2. Click the Store link.
The Store link is under Control Panels.
  3. Go to Domain Names.
The Domain Names link is under Site Settings
  4. Select the Domain or Hostname you wish to redirect to from the Primary Domain menu. Note: If you have a domain registered outside of Turbify which you wish to use for the domain redirect, you will need to add a hostname first.
  5. If Disable 301 Redirect is unchecked, the redirect will not occur. Check this box to enable the redirect to the Primary Domain selected.
  6. Click the Update Redirect Settings button. A confirmation page appears showing the redirect setting you selected.
  7. On the confirmation page, do one of the following:
    • Click Go to Store Manager if finished
    • Click Return to Domain Name Management if you wish to change your setting.
      The redirect confirmation page

Add a new hostname

At this time, adding new domains is temporarily disabled - please contact support if you need to have an additional domain pointed to your store.

If you own a domain registered with a different login ID, a domain registered outside of Turbify, or if you previously deleted the hostnames for the root domain and/or the www subdomain and wish to add them back, you will need to add your domain to the hostnames list. Once your domain appears in the hostname list, it will also be available for selection in the domain redirect setting. If your domain is registered under the same Turbify ID as your Merchant Solutions store then your domain should automatically appear in the list.

  1. Add a CNAME record for your domain (e.g. www.your-site-here.net) to storename.stores.turbify.net.
Note: Please contact your domain name provider if you need assistance.
  2. Sign in to your My Services page.
  3. Click the Store link.
The Store link is under Control Panels.
  4. Go to Domain Names.
The Domain Names link is under Site Settings
  5. Click the Add link under Hostnames.
    Click Add.
  6. Enter your domain name in the field and click the Next button.
    Enter domain name.
  7. Confirm your ownership of the domain by typing This is my domain in the field provided at the bottom of the page and click the Next button.
Type This is my domain and click Next.
  8. Review the information about setting a CNAME at your registrar and click the Next button again.
    Click Next.
  9. View or edit the hostname you are creating. Note: The default will show as www.domain name. However, at this step, you can remove the www and leave either the root domain or add a different subdomain to replace www (such as info).
    Editing the hostname.
  10. Click the Done button when finished.
    Click Done.
  11. Click the OK button.
    Click OK.

You will see your hostname listed in the Hostnames section and your hostname will now also appear in the Domain Redirect Setting drop-down list. You can then select that hostname as your default domain redirect setting.

Notes:

  • After selecting your redirect setting, it can take up to 90 minutes for the change to take effect. If you try testing your redirect setting after this time and you are not redirected to the proper domain or hostname, try clearing your browser's cache and reloading the URL again.
  • Setting a redirect will not affect your affiliate or trackable links. Trackable links will still be counted as the requests are made to the server. Once counted, the trackable or affiliate links (if set to redirect) would permanently redirect to the selected redirect URL.
  • If you see a Too many redirects error after selecting your redirect setting, disable and then re-enable your SSL certificate in Security Manager.
