Merchants who are open for business can set up tax rates in the Manage Taxes page accessible by clicking the Tax Rates link in the Order Settings column of the Store Manager. If you are not open for business, you can set up tax rates in the Tax Wizard.
Setting up tax rates in the Manage Tax page
- Sign in your My Services page.
- Click the Store link.
- Go to Tax Rates.
- Click the Add New Rule button.
- Specify a location for the tax rule. This represents the shipping address for which the rule:
- Inside US (default) - Use this in conjunction with the State or Zip Code field.
- International - Select Inside and select a country from the menu to limit the rule to one country. Select Outside to specify a rule to apply to addresses located outside the selected country or countries. Select Anywhere to apply a tax rate regardless of shipping address.
- Specify the State(s) (Province or Region for International) to which to apply the tax by entering the two-letter abbreviation for the State or Province. Separate multiple state abbreviations by commas (for example HI,AK.).
- Optional: Specify the ZIP code (or range of ZIP codes) to which to apply the tax. For example, entering 89 matches all ZIP codes starting with 89, or you can enter a range (e.g., 894-896). You may enter multiple ZIP codes or ZIP code ranges, or a combination of these, separated by commas (e.g. 891-892, 894-896). Please see our note about entering a range of ZIP codes.
- Optional: Select whether or not the rate will override all other rules. Override rules will apply if there is a match for the shipping address and what is defined in the rule and no other rule will be applied.
- Specify the charge:
- Percentage of Taxable Amount
- Percentage of Shipping Amount (in states where shipping and/or handling is taxable
- Flat Rate to add a specific dollar amount to the order
- Click the Create button.
- Click the Done button when complete.
- Return to Store Manager and publish your Order Settings.
If you wish to use the State Selector feature (found in the Tax Wizard) to create a tax rule based on the base state tax rate, click Back to Tax Wizard.
You can use the Shipping and Tax Test linked from the Store Manager in the Order Settings column, to test the tax rates you have set up and published.
Formatting a range of ZIP codes or postal codes
When entering a range of ZIP codes or postal codes for which a tax rule applies, the range values must be separated using a hyphen, must not contain spaces, and must not include quotation marks. For example, if you wanted to apply a specific tax rule to ZIP codes 12345 through 12789, this range should be entered as follows: 12345-12789.
If spaces are used (for example, 12345 - 12789), or quotation marks are included (for example, 12345-12789), the range values will not be recognized and the tax rule for this range will not be applied.
Note: Turbify is unable to provide tax advice to merchants for determining your tax requirements based on your location(s) and products. Due to the financial and legal implications surrounding tax requirements, Turbify strongly recommends merchants consult a small business tax advisor for determining the exact tax rates applicable to your store.
